A woman who reports a UFO sighting calls out state troopers Bill Padgett and Dan Perry to a forest in winter. They notice that something, possibly a meteorite, has broken through the ice on a nearby pond but has frozen over. Perry finds footprints leading away while Padgett gets a call that the nearby bridge is out. They follow the footprints to a diner with a bus parked outside. Going inside, they talk to Haley the counterman. Haley says that he was there alone until the bus driver Olmstead arrived with his passengers. They tell Olmstead that the bridge is closed due to the weather, and the bus driver notes that the road behind them is closed off a well so they're trapped for the time being. The troopers tell them to prepare for a long night at the diner. One of the passengers, an older man named Ross, is disgusted as he's in a hurry to get to Boston.
