What's the latest about the Pearl Harbor day 2009?
Read an article below from JConline.com:
On Dec. 7, 1941, Imperial Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack, which drew the United States into World War II, killed more than 2,300 U.S. military personnel.
Lafayette's Pat Fitzgerald, 81, a Korean War veteran, attended the remembrance ceremony in the Big Four Depot at Riehle Plaza and on the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge.
"I'm here because I'm a veteran and want to honor the veterans from World War II," Fitzgerald said.
"I remember my dad saying he had just heard about the attack on the radio. He was pretty upset."
Lafayette's Vincent Amato, 86, is believed to be the only remaining Tippecanoe County survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Doris Cooper, 90, of Covington also survived the attack.
Amato, a Navy veteran, attended the remembrance ceremony after an absence of about six years. He said he decided to come to the ceremony after talking to a young relative, who didn't know about Pearl Harbor, the Boston Tea Party or the Battle of San Juan Hill.
